My brother Paul and his wife Claire celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in Bath at the weekend at the fabulous Roman Baths and Pump Room. Although not on official photography duties I took a few shots as dancing’s not really my thing (two left feet and a complete lack of rhythm). I really hope I get to shoot a wedding there one day, it’s an amazing setting.
It was also great to catch up with two couples whose weddings I’ve photographed in the last couple of years and see how they’re all doing.
This is just a small selection of my favourites from the evening below. The rest are in the gallery (click here). Sorry folks, this one’s password protected for friends and family only. Email me if you were there and want the password.
I should also say I am very impressed with the new 5Dmk2 on it’s first outing.

Am I glad to see the back of ‘Chemistry’ three weeks late and still lacking in inspiration. Is it Chemistry? Probably not, more like pharmaceuticals or chemist (rather than chemistry) as it’s just a few pills. It’s definitely an experiment though. Give or take a test shot or two this is the first shot with my new 5DmkII and I wanted to see how far I could push it. This was shot in appalling light (for the photographers among you ISO 4000, f2.8, 1/80sec) and there is noise, but compared to what I would have got out of my mk1 I’m delighted with it. So the experiment worked. Chemistry? Yada yada yada, I’ve got candid to worry about now…

Just a few photos from an impromptu trip to Whipsnade earlier this week having abandoned plans to go to the coast and catch up with my 52 Photo Challenge. I’ve been there a few times and while it’s an excellent zoo I can’t help feeling a cheat taking photos of animals in captivity. There’s nothing quite like the threat of being eaten to make you feel like you deserved a photo. However, I live in Harrow and I’m no wildlife photographer so this is about as wild as it gets, give or take the odd fox.

Here’s ‘Play’. I’m not sure where this idea came from other than I used to play football and piano (not at the same time) in my youth but no longer do either mainly as I came to the realisation I wasn’t particularly good at either of them. Ah well, at least I’m persevering with photography…

The last of my catch up posts to bring this up to date and I took this on the same afternoon as ‘People’. The British Museum is interminally boring to me so I headed to the much more appealing Imperial War Museum. I only went there for a ‘Mechanical’ shot and ended up staying for 4 hours looking at the exhibits. If you’ve not been the holocaust exhibition is a must and is surely the most moving display in London.
This photo is actually from a large Argentinian gun. I don’t know the official term but it’s part of the ammunition belt that carries the bullets up to the gun. I’m not sure it says mechanical but it’s close enough I think and at least topical with Argentina kicking up a fuss about the Falklands again. At least that hasn’t come to anything more than talking…yet.

On the face of it this should have been an easy one for me being a wedding photographer. I take pictures of people all the time so just use one of those. Two things wrong with that though: firstly I’m trying to avoid using anything in the archives; secondly I haven’t got any weddings this week.
“Back to the old drawing board” as they say…I wanted to show people, not a single person, so I had ruled out a straight portrait shot from the start. I didn’t want a posed shot either and I think that’s reflected in my wedding photography as the vast majority of my wedding photos are unposed. So I had an idea in my head to capture a busy scene of people with one still person in the middle. Fortunately London is virtually on my door-step and if you want busy, you’ll definitely get it there but London’s a big place. So where in London is free to get in, busy, has a fairly neutral backdrop that doesn’t distract from the people, and you’re not thrown out by an over zealous security guard for taking photos? The answer is the The Great Court at The British Museum. Lovely bright diffused light, places to get up high and no distracting backgrounds or patterned flooring.
I was there for around half an hour trying to get this shot and it’s still not quite right. I think the still people could be a little more interesting and maybe they’re a bit central but I’d had enough strange looks off tourists wondering why I was taking photos of the ground and decided to call it a day.
